How to Use the Filter Tool
The Filter Tool allows you to select the Data Feed (USGS, EMSC, or NRC) and filter the earthquakes by magnitude or distance from your location. This gives you more control over which earthquakes are displayed in the Quake List and Quake Map.

How to Access the Filter Tool
Tap the second button from the left on the bottom Tool Bar to access the Filter Tool. The following screen will be displayed.
The default settings for the data feed and filters are: USGS 7-day, Magnitude M2.0 and higher, All Distances, No excluded locations. If you would like to change these settings, then continue reading for instructions. When you are finished adjusting these settings, you can dismiss the Filter Tool screen by tapping Done in the top right corner or swiping down.
Selecting a Data Feed
Tap on Data Feed to choose from either USGS (1-day, 7-day, or 30-day), EMSC (1-day or 7-day), NRC 30-Day, or a Historical Feed. USGS is the best source for earthquakes in the USA, Cascadia Subduction Zone, and the Caribbean. Canada is best for Canada. EMSC is best for most other world locations.
Filtering by Magnitude
To filter the earthquakes by magnitude, tap on Minimum Magnitude then choose the minimum magnitude. Earthquakes with a smaller magnitude will be removed from the list.
Filtering by Distance
To filter by distance from your location, tap on Distance from Location then select a distance. Location services must be enabled in order to filter by distance.
Excluding Locations
You can exclude certain locations from the list. For example, if there is a swarm happening with hundreds of small earthquakes for a particular location, then you may want to temporarily exclude those quakes from the list. To exclude a location, tap Excluded Locations then tap Add Excluded Location.
NOTE: We discourage use of this feature, but a number of QuakeFeed users requested it. You spoke and we listened :)
Clear All Filters
To clear all filters and restore the default settings, tap Clear in the top left corner of the Filter Tool. The default settings are:
- Data Feed: USGS 7-Day
- Minimum Magnitude: 2.0
- Distance from Location: All
- Excluded Locations: None
